When it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and sounds like a duck, do not always assume it is a duck.  This rings true for volunteer organizations, which, oftentimes, are actually found to be “employers,” and subject to the laws regarding discrimination, harassment and retaliation.  Do not wait to be charged to learn whether an agency or a court determines whether or not your organization is covered by these laws.  Alisa will discuss the major laws of which you should be aware, how to comply with them, and why complying with them can be so instrumental in reaching your recruitment and retention goals.  Alisa will also provide an introduction to how to manage the “work environment” once an active volunteer has charged the Department with wrongdoing.  Some “best practices” for how the volunteer and Department Officers should be conducting themselves will be explored.
