Description

Many first responders have witnessed, perpetuated, or unwittingly participated in assistance and care that violates core values and belief systems, particularly in dealing with the pandemic over the last two years. First responders who have experienced or witnessed a catastrophic injury or the death of a co-worker due to a line-of-duty incident, suicide, or illness may experience survivor's guilt. These events may result in what is called moral distress or injury, which is a persistent struggle with psychological, spiritual, and sometimes physical pain that is frequently accompanied by post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and other mental health disorders. Moral injury and survivor guilt can manifest as painful feelings such as shame, remorse, grief, disdain, disgust, and anger. However, these feelings need not define the affected individual's life or work. It is possible to overcome moral harm and reconnect with their values, beliefs, and principles.
