A fire department’s willingness to be vulnerable after a line-of-duty death (LODD) is difficult and acknowledged, but it serves the fire service community by providing the information needed to develop safety advisories, workplace solutions, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) alerts, and prevention recommendations within NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) LODD reports. This detailed look at specific LODD investigations conducted by the NIOSH FFFIPP will demonstrate how a department’s vulnerability can have a positive impact on other fire departments in relation to professional development, situational awareness, and incident management.
