John S. Cunningham is the Executive Director of the North American Fire Training Directors
(NAFTD), representing state, provincial, and territorial fire training systems across the United States and Canada. With more than 20 years of experience as a fire training director and over two decades in senior leadership within the fire service, John is widely recognized for advancing professional standards, accreditation, and organizational governance in firefighter education.
John has played a significant role in international accreditation and professional qualifications. He has served in multiple leadership positions with the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), including Chair of the Council of Governors and Chair of the Certificate Assembly Board of Governors, and as an IFSAC Site Team Leader. He also serves on the Board of Directors for The Pro Board—National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications. In addition, he has contributed to the development and refinement of NFPA professional qualification standards through technical committee participation.
John is committed to strengthening fire training systems, fostering collaboration across
